The Hermès Kelly and Birkin are the two most coveted handbags in the world, and at first glance they look similar: both use the same leathers, hardware and saddle-stitching. The differences are in shape, how you carry them, and their history.

History
The Kelly is the older design, derived from a saddle bag Hermès created in the 1930s; it became world-famous after Grace Kelly was photographed carrying it in the 1950s. The Birkin followed in 1984, designed after Jane Birkin met Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas and asked for a bag that was both elegant and spacious.
Sellier vs Retourné
Both bags come in two constructions. Sellier has visible exterior stitching and sharp edges for a structured look, while Retourné is stitched inside out and turned for softer lines. The Mini Kelly 20 and the Birkin 20 are typically Sellier.
Which Should You Choose?

Price
At US retail in 2026, a Kelly 25 in Togo or Epsom costs about $13,700 and a Birkin 25 in Togo about $13,500, so the two are closely matched. Rare sizes, exotic leathers and limited editions of either model sell for far more on the secondary market.
